Mount Solitary

Mount Solitary is a 950-meter summit in the Blue Mountains that rises steeply from Jamison Valley, surrounded by dense eucalyptus forests. Its isolated position makes it stand out distinctly from the surrounding ridgelines in the region.

European settlers first noted the mountain in the early 1800s, recognizing how it stood apart from the main ridgelines of the region. It gradually became an important landmark for exploration routes throughout the Blue Mountains.

The mountain held deep meaning for the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, who used this land for gathering and travel long before European arrival. Walking through the valleys today, you can sense the layers of connection that indigenous communities maintained with this landscape.

The mountain is best reached through multi-day hiking routes, with a popular circuit of about 34 kilometers that uses campsites near Ruined Castle and along Kedumba River valley. Plan for several days and bring proper gear, as the terrain is demanding.

The Korowal Knife Edge is a narrow rocky ridge encountered along the route that requires careful movement across exposed rock. Hikers value this section for its technical challenge and the views it offers across multiple valleys.
