Church of the Holy Innocents, Anglican church in Rossmore, Australia.
The Church of the Holy Innocents in Rossmore is an Anglican place of worship built in Gothic Revival style, with steep roofs, an open timber porch, and a belfry positioned on Rossmore Avenue West. The structure features a chancel and interior furnishings that reflect the design approach of its architects and builders.
The foundation stone was laid on 28 December 1848 under the direction of architects Richard Cromwell Carpenter and Edmund Blacket. The construction was completed in 1850 by William Munro.
The furnishings inside, especially the cedar pieces and stone font, reflect the craftsmanship of the period and show how skilled artisans contributed to the building's character. Walking through the space, you notice the care taken in every detail.
The cemetery behind the church has been in use since 1829 and continues to accept burials, so visitors should approach the grounds respectfully. Historical graves and memorials are maintained alongside new interments, making it an active place of remembrance.
The name comes from the date of the foundation stone ceremony on 28 December 1848, which falls on the Feast of the Holy Innocents in the Christian calendar. This timing gave the building its name from the moment construction began.
