La Perouse Mission Church, Heritage church in La Perouse, Australia.
La Perouse Mission Church is a Gothic building at 46 Adina Avenue that features six leaded glass windows, a wooden pulpit, and memorial plaques throughout its interior. The structure occupies land managed by the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and displays design elements from its era of construction.
Built in 1894 to serve the Aboriginal community, the church was relocated from Frenchman's Beach to its current site in 1930. The building eventually ceased its active religious use but gained heritage protection in recognition of its historical importance.
The church served as a shared space where Aboriginal residents kept their cultural practices alive while engaging with Christianity. Visitors can see how the community wove together different spiritual worlds in this building.
The building is accessible on foot and its interior can be explored fairly quickly, making it convenient to visit while exploring the neighborhood. The site is easy to reach, but check opening times beforehand since access may vary depending on the day.
This is the only church in Sydney that was built specifically for an Aboriginal community and has remained under their control since construction. Its continuity of community management from European settlement to today makes it a rare example in the city's religious history.
