Bare Island Fort, Coastal fort in La Perouse, Sydney, Australia.
Bare Island Fort is a coastal defense structure located on an island in Botany Bay near La Perouse in Sydney. The building contains artillery emplacements, underground chambers, and a wooden bridge that links it to the mainland.
The fort was built between 1880 and 1885 in response to British fears of potential Russian naval attacks on the Sydney colony. Following its construction, it served as a military defense installation protecting the harbor and surrounding waters.
The structure represents a significant example of nineteenth-century military architecture and served as Australia's first war veterans' residence from 1912.
Access is via the wooden bridge, which may close during rough sea conditions and requires sturdy footwear to cross safely. The walking paths on the island are straightforward, though the ground can become slippery after rain.
The surrounding waters are home to colorful coral reefs and rare marine species that attract divers from across Australia. Experienced divers often come here to explore the underwater environment around the island.
