Long Bay Correctional Centre, Maximum security prison in Malabar, Australia
The prison in Malabar is one of the largest facilities of its kind in New South Wales and covers several separate areas for different purposes. Buildings include housing for inmates, medical facilities and administrative spaces that spread across an extensive walled site.
Originally opened in 1909 as a facility for female inmates, the site expanded five years later to include a wing for male prisoners. Over the decades the grounds have been rebuilt and adapted several times to meet changing needs, eventually becoming a central location for high security confinement.
The name comes from the bay once used by fishermen before the site was repurposed and took on its current function. Visitors see high walls and watchtowers from the outside, which clearly show the closed nature of the facility.
Access to the facility is only possible with prior authorization, as this is a closed high security site. Anyone wishing to enter the grounds for professional or personal reasons should inquire well in advance about the necessary steps.
A former high security unit in the complex used surveillance technology that was considered groundbreaking for such facilities at the time. After just a few years, however, this unit was shut down following criticism of the conditions of confinement.
