The beach area served as a smallpox sanitation camp in 1881, leading to the establishment of Coast Hospital for treating infectious diseases.
In 1969, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude covered one million square feet of Little Bay's coastline with fabric in their groundbreaking environmental art installation.
The beach lacks lifeguard patrols and requires visitors to bring their own amenities, though public facilities are available in nearby areas.
A ring of weathered rocks on the southern side forms Little Bay Baths, constructed in the 1900s as a protected swimming area for hospital nurses.
