Balmain Reservoir, reservoir in Australia
Balmain Reservoir is a large underground water storage facility built beneath Gladstone Park in New South Wales. The structure features a solid concrete and brick construction, and visitors can access the area through park pathways with open lawns, shaded trees, and sitting benches for viewing.
The reservoir was built in 1915 by the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage to supply water to the inner west of the city. After residents protested losing park space, the structure was placed underground and the park was restored above it.
The name reflects the area's colonial history, and the reservoir has become a quiet gathering place for the neighborhood. Local residents use Gladstone Park above it regularly for walks and to enjoy simple outdoor time away from the busy streets.
The area is easy to explore on foot, with paved paths suitable for a leisurely walk or light jog. Access is free, and benches are available for resting in various shaded spots throughout the park.
A remnant of a bandstand from 1918 still stands on top of the reservoir, originally built for public music performances and gatherings. This octagonal brick structure is the only visible reminder of the park's entertainment past.
