Accountants House, Commercial building in The Rocks, Sydney, Australia.
Accountants House is a five-story commercial building in The Rocks with brick walls, timber beams, paired windows set in recessed bays, and battlemented parapets at 117-119 Harrington Street. The structure demonstrates the solid construction typical of early 1900s warehouse buildings.
The site was once used as stables and converted into a warehouse beginning in 1914. It later became the headquarters of the Australian Society of Accountants during the 1950s.
The building displays typical early 1900s business warehouse design and continues to shape the streetscape of The Rocks with its brick facades and tall window rows. The multiple street-level entrances reflect how different companies operated side by side within the same structure.
The building has four separate entrances on Harrington, Essex, and Gloucester Streets that provide access to different office spaces. These multiple entry points make it easy to reach various sections of the complex.
The building stands on a site formerly known as Gallows Hill, an execution ground that transformed into a place of commerce and accounting. This stark change reflects The Rocks' broader reimagining after 1900.
