The Old Police Station at 127-129 George Street is a sandstone building with timber balconies, a central hallway, and original metal doors fitted with window grilles. The structure displays typical features of public administration buildings from this era.
The building was completed in 1882 by architect James Barnet on the site of Sydney's first General Hospital from 1788. This conversion reflects how the settlement's priorities shifted as it developed.
The station was named for its role as an enforcement hub in early colonial Sydney. Visitors can observe the royal symbols above the entrance, which reflect the authority structure of that era.
The building now houses Sergeant Lok restaurant, allowing visitors to explore its interior spaces. It sits in a central location within The Rocks and is easy to find among the nearby historic streets.
This building is one of only two surviving nineteenth-century police stations remaining in central Sydney. The original cells still feature their period fixtures and fittings.
