Susannah Place Museum, Historic house museum in The Rocks, Sydney, Australia
Susannah Place Museum comprises four connected terrace houses on Gloucester Street with preserved interiors and original furnishings spanning several periods. A reconstructed 1915 corner shop displays how goods were sold and rooms were used during that time.
Built in 1844, these houses continuously housed working families until 1990 when they became a museum operated by Sydney Living Museums. The site preserves nearly 150 years of everyday life within a working community in The Rocks.
The rooms display how working-class families lived through preserved paint layers, wallpapers, and original household items that show daily routines and personal choices. These spaces reflect the memories and adaptations of people who made these small houses their home over many decades.
Entry is only by guided tour, which must be booked ahead to secure a place and allow time to explore the spaces properly. Wear comfortable shoes since the visit involves navigating multiple levels and narrow staircases throughout the connected houses.
The museum preserves original brick privies and open laundry areas, representing some of the oldest surviving washing and sanitary facilities in Sydney. These functional spaces show how families managed daily life before modern household conveniences existed.
