4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Contemporary Asian art museum in Haymarket, Sydney, Australia.
The 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art is an art museum housed in a heritage building on Hay Street in Sydney's Chinatown. It presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary art from Asia, the Pacific, and the Asian Australian community across several gallery rooms.
The centre was founded in 1996 by the Asian Australian Artists Association and first opened on Sussex Street before moving to its current building in Chinatown. That move brought it closer to the community it had set out to represent from the start.
The 4A shows works by artists from Asia, the Pacific, and the Asian Australian diaspora that raise questions about identity and belonging. Visitors can see how these perspectives take shape across painting, video, and installation in the gallery rooms.
The centre sits in the middle of Sydney's Chinatown and is easy to reach on foot from the main train stations and public transport stops. Visitors who want to attend a talk or workshop should check in advance, as these events do not take place every day.
The 4A runs a digital platform where artists develop commissioned works using augmented and virtual reality that can be experienced outside the physical gallery rooms. This means some of its projects exist entirely beyond the walls of the building.
