Haymarket Post Office, Historic post office in Haymarket, Sydney, Australia
Haymarket Post Office is a five-story building at 633-635 George Street with rectangular portals and windows recessed into arches on the ground floor. The structure displays classical architectural features with carefully proportioned details across its facade.
The Australian Government acquired the land in 1912 under the Lands Acquisition Act, and construction of the building took place between 1927 and 1928 by H. W. Thompson Ltd. The design followed Interwar architectural principles and established a new service hub for the area.
The building served as a gathering point for different communities over the decades. From 1929 to 1973, Chinese residents maintained strong connections there, while the telephone department that opened in 1946 drew visitors from across the city.
The building no longer operates as a post office, but visitors can find alternative services nearby in the area. World Square Post Shop and Sydney GPO Post Shop provide postal services for anyone who needs them.
The building still preserves its original open-style lift and postal hall from the Interwar period. These functional spaces rarely survive and show how the service operated when it was built.
