Regent Theatre, Movie theater in George Street, Sydney, Australia
Regent Theatre was a movie theater on George Street featuring Italian Renaissance architecture with monumental pillars and marble walls. The venue had a glass marquee spanning its entrance and provided seating for over 2000 patrons.
The theater was built in 1928 as a flagship venue for the Hoyts Theatres circuit. It featured a 40-piece orchestra and a Wurlitzer pipe organ that provided accompaniment for live performances and screenings.
The theatre presented numerous film premieres and live performances, including shows by Debbie Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, and Marcel Marceau during the 1970s.
The venue was conveniently located on the main commercial street George Street in central Sydney. The building's operations ended in May 1984, and visitors can see the historic structure standing on the same site.
The original Art Deco chandelier from the foyer was preserved after the venue closed and now serves as a historical artifact. A specially crafted lightweight replica of this chandelier is displayed at The Metro Theatre in Sydney.
