Sydney Town Hall, Town hall and concert venue in George Street, Sydney, Australia.
Sydney Town Hall is a two-story sandstone building with neoclassical architecture at 483 George Street, housing council chambers and concert halls. Large columns frame the entrance, while ornate ceilings and detailed stonework appear throughout the interior.
Work began in 1869 on the site of the former city cemetery and finished in 1890 after two building phases. The location served as a burial ground between 1792 and 1820.
The name honors its function as the city's municipal headquarters, while Centennial Hall with its Grand Organ from 1890 continues to host concerts and public events today. Visitors experience the acoustics of this space during regular musical performances and official occasions.
Access is from Druitt Street with an elevator, accessible facilities, and hearing support systems for all visitors. The building sits centrally opposite the Queen Victoria Building in the pedestrian area.
Before the Sydney Opera House opened, this was the city's main concert hall. The Grand Organ ranks as the largest tubular-pneumatic pipe organ in the world.
