Sydney Central Police Station, Historic police station in Sydney, Australia
Sydney Central Police Station is a Federation Free Classical building on Central Street with a three-section facade and wrought iron balconies. Today it houses prosecutor offices and holding cells that support the adjacent Central Local Court.
The building was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet and opened in 1892. Between 1926 and 1928, dormitories were converted into individual rooms and two additional floors were added.
The name 'Central' reflects its location in Sydney's business heart. The sandstone facade and wrought iron details remain defining features of the streetscape today.
The building can be viewed from the street as you walk through the business district. It is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive sandstone architecture and location on a main thoroughfare.
The building features a dedicated prisoner entry point with carved stone detailing. This separated design reflects how the movement of detained individuals was kept distinct from other building users.
