Plaza Theatre, Entertainment venue in George Street, Sydney, Australia

The Plaza Theatre is a former cinema on George Street in Sydney, built in a Mediterranean Revival style with Corinthian columns and decorated concrete details across its facade. The interior has been converted to retail use, but parts of the original foyer survive inside the commercial space.

The building opened in 1930 as a cinema, at a time when large picture palaces were being built across Australian cities. Over the following decades it hosted films and live performances before being converted to its current retail use.

Going to the Plaza was a social event for Sydneysiders, who dressed up to attend screenings as part of their regular city life. The building's style signaled that entertainment was taken seriously, and the venue carried a sense of occasion that ordinary shops rarely had.

The building sits on George Street in Sydney's central business district and is easy to reach on foot from nearby public transport stops. The facade is best seen from the footpath, as the interior is a working retail space and access depends on the shops' opening hours.

The outer walls feature rough cast stucco with Spanish-inspired patterns and colored floral ornaments, a combination that was rare in Australia when the building was completed. These details are still visible on the facade today and stand out against the modern buildings that now surround it.
