Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre is a cinema building on George Street featuring Mediterranean Revival architecture with Corinthian columns and decorated concrete details on its facade. The interior now houses retail shops, though sections of the original foyer remain visible within the modern commercial spaces.

The building opened in 1930 as a state-of-the-art cinema with one of the country's largest screens at that time. It remained a major entertainment destination for films and live performances throughout the twentieth century before being converted to retail use.

The building served as a popular social gathering place where Sydneysiders would dress up for nights out during the mid-twentieth century. Its ornate style reflected the pride people took in their entertainment venues and the importance of cinema as a central part of urban life.
