Highroyd is a two-storey Victorian house on Johnston Street in Annandale, standing above a tall retaining wall of tan, brown and grey sandstone blocks. Its cream-painted facade carries tall narrow windows with white frames and a lacework balcony with dark posts, while a projecting corner tower with a steep grey slate roof and finial rises at the right. A steep gabled roof with decorated bargeboards tops the left section.

John Young, who migrated from England in 1855 and settled in Sydney in 1866, built Highroyd in 1877 as one of eight large houses on the west side of Johnston Street. He built it for one of his daughters, alongside the identical Hockindon, and the pair were among the first Sydney houses to use reinforced concrete. The 1890s depression led to subdivision and decline, and Highroyd was later divided into flats.

Highroyd and its neighbour Hockindon were built for John Young's daughters and share an identical design, except that Highroyd has a spire. With Kenilworth they are known as the "witches houses", because the spires are thought to resemble witches' hats. The houses were also notable for their early use of reinforced concrete.

Highroyd stands on the west side of Johnston Street, in the row of John Young's houses that begins with The Abbey and continues through Oybin, Rozelle, Greba, Hockindon, Highroyd, Kenilworth and Claremont. Rozelle and Claremont were later demolished and replaced by home-unit blocks, so the sequence is no longer complete. The house is a private residence on the Inner West Council heritage list; the sandstone retaining wall and gate opening at the right of the frontage are visible from the street.

Local residents call Highroyd and its neighboring house Hockindon the witches houses because of their characteristic spires and Gothic architectural features. This local nickname has developed over time and is recognized by both visitors and residents.
