Sewage Pumping Station 3
Sewage Pumping Station 3, Heritage sewerage pumping station in Annandale, Australia
Sewage Pumping Station 3 is a wastewater facility in Annandale featuring a single-story brick building above underground concrete chambers that house machinery and sewage chambers. The station moves waste through pipes and pumps to treatment areas serving the surrounding neighborhoods.
Built between 1902 and 1904 by the Public Works Department to address serious harbor pollution problems in Sydney, the station became a key part of the city's effort to improve water management. The project reflected growing concern about sanitation in rapidly expanding urban areas.
The building displays Federation Queen Anne design with a curved corrugated iron roof, timber windows, and carefully detailed brickwork that shows how much care went into making functional buildings look substantial. This reveals how the city valued craftsmanship even in practical infrastructure.
The station sits near Johnstons Creek in western Sydney and is best reached on foot from surrounding streets where parking is available along Booth Street. The site operates as active infrastructure, so access may be limited to exterior viewing depending on current maintenance needs.
The building retains an original wall-mounted lifting crane and interior walls designed to look like shaped stone blocks, demonstrating early twentieth-century engineering approaches. These technical features are uncommon survivors that reveal how equipment was both practical and visibly displayed.
