Sydney Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial, LGBTQ+ memorial in Green Park, Darlinghurst, Australia.
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial is a public memorial in Green Park, at the corner of Victoria Street and Darlinghurst Road in Darlinghurst, Sydney. It takes the form of a pink enameled steel prism surrounded by black steel columns arranged in a fractured Star of David pattern.
The memorial was dedicated on February 27, 2001, to honor LGBTQ+ people who were persecuted and killed during the Nazi era. It was among the first public memorials in Australia to formally recognize this group of Holocaust victims.
The pink triangle displayed here was originally a badge that Nazis forced gay men to wear in concentration camps. It was later reclaimed by LGBTQ+ communities around the world as a symbol of remembrance and solidarity.
The memorial is open at all times and sits in a public park, so no booking or admission is needed. It is easy to reach by bus or train, as several routes pass through the Darlinghurst area.
An inscription by Rosanne Bersten names women who loved women, men who loved men, and people who defied gender roles. This wording makes clear that Nazi persecution went beyond sexual orientation and also targeted those who challenged gender norms.
