Horizon Apartments, Residential high-rise in Darlinghurst, Australia.
Horizon Apartments is a residential tower on Forbes Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney, rising 43 floors above the surrounding neighborhood. The building has a scalloped concrete facade that gives it a curved, wave-like appearance from the street.
The building was designed by architect Harry Seidler and completed in 1998 by Grollo Constructions after two years of work. It was part of a wave of high-rise projects that reshaped parts of Sydney during the 1990s.
The building received the 1999 Wilkinson Award from the New South Wales Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects for residential design. This award is one of the most recognized honors in Australian architecture.
The tower stands on Forbes Street in Darlinghurst, a central part of Sydney that is easy to reach on foot from nearby areas. Since it is a private residential building, access inside is limited to residents and their guests.
Harry Seidler was one of the first architects to bring a modernist high-rise approach to Australia, and this tower was among his last major residential projects. Seidler was born in Vienna and arrived in Australia as a refugee, which makes his lasting influence on the country's 20th-century architecture all the more notable.
