Stoneleigh, Darlinghurst, Victorian Regency residence in Darlinghurst, Australia.
Stoneleigh is a stone and brick house in Darlinghurst with an arched covered porch on one side. The roof is covered with corrugated steel sheets, the windows have timber frames divided into twelve panes, and the supporting columns have eight-sided tops with special decorative details.
The building was constructed during the early development of Darlinghurst in the mid-1800s as a residence for a wealthy family. Richard Jones, a successful banker and newspaper publisher, owned the house from 1870 to 1892 and was a prominent figure in Sydney's business world during that period.
The house reflects how wealthy residents of 19th-century Darlinghurst built their homes and what architectural styles they favored. The iron fence, windows, and decorative details show the craftsmanship and taste of that era.
The house is located on Darley Street and has been registered as a protected heritage site since 1999. Visitors can view the architecture from outside, but should note that it is private property and access to the interior may be limited.
The eight-sided column tops with their specially shaped decorative details are unusual architectural features that make this covered porch stand out. These elements show careful craftsmanship that was less common in many other homes from that era.
