Sydney Sports Ground, Sports stadium in Moore Park, Australia
Sydney Sports Ground was a stadium in Moore Park featuring two main grandstands and a large hill that could hold about 35,000 spectators. The facility had two separate grounds, with the main field equipped with lights for evening games and the second field hosting state-level cricket matches.
The ground opened in 1911 and served many sports until 1987, when it was demolished to make room for the Sydney Football Stadium. In its early years, it also operated as a speedway with a concrete track that was later replaced by a dirt surface.
The ground served as home to the Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Club and drew crowds who gathered to support their teams and experience local sporting rivalries. Beyond rugby league, it hosted soccer and Australian football matches, making it a gathering place for fans of multiple sports.
The location was accessible by tram and later other public transport and sat centrally within Moore Park. The two separate grounds allowed different sports to be held simultaneously, so visitors needed to plan ahead depending on which events they wanted to see.
Operating as a speedway between 1917 and 1955 was an unexpected aspect of the venue, showing its versatility beyond traditional ball sports. This motor-racing phase was brief but shaped what the ground offered for decades.
