Everglades Gardens

Everglades Gardens is a terraced property in Leura, Blue Mountains, featuring stone walls, formal flower beds, and a three-story Mediterranean-style house at its center. The landscape slopes naturally across the site, with planted areas arranged in distinct levels connected by pathways.

The site was developed in 1933 when Henri Van de Velde purchased the estate and partnered with Danish landscape gardener Paul Sorensen. Their collaboration resulted in gardens designed to blend native Australian flora with introduced plant species.

The gardens blend Australian native plants with European design traditions that visitors can see in the stone paths and flower arrangements. Rhododendron collections grow alongside exotic species in ways that reflect both local and imported gardening practices.

The pathways wind through multiple levels, so visitors should be prepared for slopes and stepped sections as they explore the property. Walking shoes are practical for navigating the terraced landscape and stone-lined routes throughout the grounds.

The terraced design follows the mountain's natural slope, creating separate garden rooms that each display different plant collections. This layout gives visitors different perspectives of the surrounding Blue Mountains landscape depending on where they stand.
