Mount Banks, Mountain summit in Blue Mountains National Park, Australia
Mount Banks features a steep ascent through tall forests of monkey gums, leading to panoramic views over the Grose Wilderness at 1,049 meters elevation.
Explorer George Cayley named the mountain after botanist Sir Joseph Banks in 1804, but Hamilton Hume changed it to Mount King George in 1827.
Early explorers mistook the greater gliders living in the monkey gum trees for actual monkeys, giving these trees their characteristic name.
The Mount Banks Summit walk extends 2.4 kilometers with a grade 3 difficulty level, requiring proper hiking equipment and 2 to 3 hours to complete.
The 2019-20 bushfires affected the mountain area significantly, yet new growth emerges among the damaged trees, creating a landscape of natural regeneration.
