Hastings

Hastings is a Federation Arts and Crafts residence in Neutral Bay featuring textured facades and asymmetrical design across multiple levels. The building at 2 Hayes Street now comprises three separate residential apartments following approved renovations.

The building was constructed in 1830 and originally served as a residence before becoming a boarding house and later a military facility for the Royal Australian Air Force. Its use changed significantly after the 1950s as local needs evolved.

The property reflects its maritime trading past through preserved stone elements and remnants embedded in the structure itself. These features connect the building to early commercial activities that shaped the local community.

The residence is located on a main street in the neighborhood and can be easily spotted from the roadway. Keep in mind this is a private residential address, so viewing should be done from outside the property.

Edward Jeaffreson Jackson designed this residence and connected it to maritime pioneers including Alfred Thrupp and John McLaren. The architect's work reflects the strong shipping connections of the area during that era.
