Westmead Hospital, hospital in New South Wales, Australia
Westmead Hospital is a major medical facility in western Sydney, located at the corner of Hawkesbury Road and Darcy Road in Westmead. The hospital operates with multiple departments covering cardiology, neurosurgery, neonatal care, oncology, and many other specialties, with trained medical staff available around the clock.
The hospital opened in 1978 and replaced older health services in Parramatta, where a hospital had existed since 1789. Over the following decades, the facility expanded several times, notably in the 2000s with new maternity and cancer treatment units.
A helipad allows emergency patients to be transported by helicopter and reach the facility quickly when needed. Visitors should check visiting hours before arriving, as some wards like maternity have extended hours compared to other areas.
The facility works closely with the University of Sydney and Sydney Medical School, functioning as a training center for future doctors and researchers. This connection allows the hospital to continuously develop new treatments and apply the latest medical practices.
