St John's Cemetery, Parramatta

Located at the intersection of O'Connell Street and Aird Street, St John's Cemetery features 3,785 memorials surrounded by an early nineteenth-century brick wall.

Established in 1790, this burial ground holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving European cemetery in Australia, containing over 50 graves from the First Fleet.

The cemetery reflects the diversity of early Australian society through its burial registers, documenting individuals of British, French, German, Danish, Indian, and Chinese descent.

Visitors can access free parking for three hours at the Westfield Parramatta Aird Street parking lot, situated directly across from the cemetery grounds.

Henry Edward Dodd's headstone, dated 1791, represents the earliest marked grave in Australia, belonging to Governor Phillip's manservant who supervised the first successful wheat crop.
