Alma House

Alma House is a two-story brick building with Victorian Italianate design features, including a slate roof and a distinctive bay window set at 114 Belmont Road. The structure displays the detailed exterior work typical of buildings from this architectural period.

Frederick Smith commissioned this residence in the mid-1890s, and it later became one of the first nursing schools in the Mosman area. This shift from a private home to a medical training facility marked an important change in the building's purpose.

The building shows how wealthy residents in the late 1800s wanted to display their status through grand proportions and detailed craftsmanship.

The building holds heritage protection status, which means its historical features are legally protected from major changes. Access to the property may be limited since it is now a private residence.

The building underwent a major renovation in 2010 that converted it from a nursing facility into a contemporary home while keeping its exterior unchanged. This transformation preserved the historic appearance while adapting the interior for modern living.
