Fernleigh Castle

Fernleigh Castle is a Victorian residence in Rose Bay constructed from sandstone with Norman-style elements including a square tower and multiple turrets topped with crenellations. The building spans several levels and contains around thirty rooms furnished with carved mahogany mantels, marble columns, and a master bedroom with generous proportions.

The estate was built in 1892, replacing an earlier cottage from 1874, with portions of the original sandstone walls incorporated into the new construction. This reuse of existing materials connected the new building to the site's prior history.

The mansion displays Victorian design choices through wrought iron balconies and stained glass windows, reflecting the taste of wealthy Australian households in the 1800s. The cedar woodwork and decorative details inside show the craftsmanship that owners of such homes valued and demanded.

Visiting requires time to explore the multiple levels and different areas with their varied details and decorative elements. The interior ornamentation is best observed in daylight to appreciate the carved plasterwork and other fine finishes throughout the rooms.

One of the bathrooms contains a deep porcelain bathtub framed in cedar and marble, revealing how much importance wealthy residents placed on bathroom luxury. This level of attention to bathing facilities was noteworthy for the era and reflected the original owners' high standing.
