Tamarama Beach

Tamarama is a small beach on Sydney's eastern coast wedged between two rocky headlands with pale sand. It forms part of the scenic coastal walking path and is framed by steep rock formations on both sides.

The beach was originally known as Dixon Bay before receiving its current name in the 1800s. An early amusement park once operated here with rides and attractions, representing a different era of local leisure.

The name comes from the Dharug Aboriginal language and reflects the natural geography of the place. Today, visitors can see how outdoor art displays along the coastal path connect this small beach to the surrounding community.

The water here is known for strong rip currents and is frequently monitored by lifeguards. Visitors should be aware of these conditions and swim only during patrolled hours.

An amusement park existed here from 1887 to 1911, offering rides and marine life displays to visitors. This vanished attraction shows how leisure activities at this location have completely transformed over time.
