Western Sydney University, Public university in Richmond, Australia.
Western Sydney University is a public university in Richmond, New South Wales, set on a sprawling site with dozens of teaching and administrative buildings. The facilities include laboratories, libraries, lecture theatres and sports areas spread across many acres of open land.
The university was formed in 1989 by merging several institutions, including Hawkesbury Agricultural College, which had existed since the 19th century. Over the following years the institution grew steadily and developed new departments beyond the original focus on agriculture.
The Richmond campus retains traces of its agricultural past, with wide lawns and old tree cover surrounding teaching buildings. Students from many countries and local families walk the paths between faculties and meet outdoors.
The campus is located several kilometres outside Richmond town centre and is reached by country roads. Visitors should allow time for orientation, as the paths between buildings cover long distances and the site spreads over a large area.
Part of the site retains older stables and outbuildings from the days of the agricultural college, now used as archive rooms and storage facilities. Some lecturers occasionally hold outdoor classes under the large eucalyptus trees beside the sports fields.
