St John's Anglican Church and Macquarie Schoolhouse
St John's Anglican Church and Macquarie Schoolhouse, Anglican church complex in Wilberforce, Australia
St John's Anglican Church is a church complex in Wilberforce with pointed sandstone walls, narrow arched windows, and a belfry at its entrance. The site spans several acres and includes a two-story Colonial Georgian schoolhouse with verandahs facing west and south.
The church was built between 1819 and 1859 under the influence of architect Edmund Blacket, whose design shaped the structure. The construction marked an important step in developing and settling the region.
The schoolhouse operated with a double purpose in the community: children attended lessons on weekdays, while Sunday services took place in the same room. This shared use shaped the rhythm of local life.
The site is spacious with multiple buildings, so allow time to explore thoroughly. Visitors should expect uneven ground and wear comfortable shoes.
The schoolhouse suffered severe fire damage in 1985 that required extensive restoration work. Craftspeople replaced damaged timber while carefully preserving the original structure.
