Cumberland Hospital, Psychiatric hospital in North Parramatta, Australia.
Cumberland Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in North Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, whose grounds contain sandstone buildings from the 19th century alongside modern treatment facilities. The site sits close to the Parramatta River and is listed on both the Australian National Heritage List and the New South Wales State Heritage Register.
The site opened in 1821 as a women's prison and was converted in 1848 into a psychiatric facility then known as Parramatta Lunatic Asylum. Through the 20th century it took its current name and gradually grew into the hospital that stands today.
The site has been known by several names over time, including Parramatta Lunatic Asylum and Parramatta Hospital for the Insane, each name reflecting how society understood mental illness in its era. Walking through the grounds today, visitors can see how the older sandstone buildings and the newer medical wings sit side by side, showing two very different ideas about care and treatment.
The main entrance is on Fleet Street in North Parramatta and is easy to reach by car or public transport. Because this is a working hospital, it is worth checking in advance which parts of the grounds are open to visitors before you arrive.
When a building from 1885 was constructed on the grounds, stone and other materials salvaged from an 1838 structure were worked directly into its walls. This means that some of the older fabric of the site is physically embedded inside what looks like a later building.
