Tomaree Head Fortifications, Military fortification site in Shoal Bay, Australia.
Tomaree Head Fortifications is a military complex with gun positions, observation posts, and radar stations on the steep cliffs at about 162 meters elevation. The structures are spread across the rock and along the ridge, showing how a coastal defense position was equipped.
The site was built in 1941 and served as a strategic defense point for Newcastle's industrial region. It was one of the main places where Australia developed its coastal defense capabilities.
The fortifications show how Australia defended its coasts during World War II and what building methods military engineers used at that time. You can still see in the bunkers and gun positions how soldiers watched over the bay from this location.
Visitors can reach the fortifications through established walking trails, though some structures remain closed for safety reasons. The trails go over uneven ground with slopes, so good footwear is important.
The location held one of only three radar sets available to Australia during the war, making it a critical detection station. This radar equipment resulted from an aerial survey from Port Kembla to Forster to choose the best positions.
