Neil Turner Weir, reservoir in Australia
Neil Turner Weir is a concrete water barrier on the Maranoa River north of Mitchell, Queensland. The structure controls water flow through a stepped cascade design and sits alongside a boat ramp, parking areas, and a lookout platform for visitor access.
Neil Turner Weir was completed in 1984 and has supplied water to Mitchell while managing river flow across the region ever since. The structure serves as part of a larger water management system designed to prevent flooding during heavy rains and ensure reliable water access for the town.
Visitors can use picnic areas, toilets, and barbecue facilities throughout the site but cannot walk on the weir itself or approach closer than 200 meters by boat. Fishing and boating are only allowed in the river away from the dam structure, and swimming near the weir is not permitted due to safety risks from sudden water releases.
The site draws birdwatchers because waterfowl and other species regularly perch and fly overhead near the water. The nearby campground operates a courtesy shuttle bus that takes visitors into town for dining and local activities, making it easy to explore without a car.
