Nimbin, Administrative district in Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia.
Nimbin is a small settlement in the northern hinterland of New South Wales, surrounded by rainforest and national parks in the hills inland from the coast. The main street runs through a compact center with shops, cafés and colorful facades that shape the character of the village.
A large festival in the seventies brought many people here looking for new ways of living and numerous stayed permanently in the settlement. Since then this wave has shaped the face of the community and its institutions up to the present day.
The name comes from the language of the local Bundjalung people and marks a place of special meaning in their connection to this land. Today many residents and visitors practice traditional crafts and grow food using organic methods in gardens and smallholdings.
A weekly market takes place every Wednesday afternoon and offers vegetables, baked goods and other regional produce directly from growers in the surrounding area. The access road was recently renewed and now allows safe passage into the village even in poor weather.
The road works following the landslides required more than two hundred support piles deep in the ground to secure the slope permanently. A retaining wall over four meters high now prevents earth masses from sliding onto the roadway again.
