St James Church, Toowoomba

St James Church is a brick building in Toowoomba designed in Gothic Revival style with pointed arches, steeply pitched roofs, and stained glass windows made by Clayton and Bell. The interior features hammer beam roof trusses and dark timber furnishings that maintain its original character.

Construction started in 1869 under architect Richard George Suter on land donated by James Taylor at the intersection of Mort and Russell Streets. The building underwent major structural updates in the 1890s, including a new iron roof to replace the original slate covering.

The brick walls display colored masonry patterns that reflect construction techniques seen in English and southern Australian churches. Walking around the building, you can observe these decorative details worked into the structure itself.

The building sits at 145 Mort Street in Toowoomba and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. The entrance has a steep stone staircase, so allow time to climb if you have mobility concerns.
