Fernside, Heritage-listed villa in East Toowoomba, Australia.

Fernside is a low, symmetrical rendered brick villa at 4–6 Fernside Street, East Toowoomba, built c. 1876 with additions up to c. 1915. It has a hipped roof clad in Colorbond sheeting, verandahs under separate roofs on the western and eastern sides, and two moulded rendered brick chimneys on the north and south elevations. The western facade has a centred porticoed entrance with a timber fretwork gable and paired timber posts, while the eastern elevation has a gabled bay window and dormer.

John Alexander Boyce, Toowoomba's Clerk of Petty Sessions from 1870, built the original section of Fernside around 1876 on land he assembled in 1876 and 1877. He sold it in February 1902 to his daughter-in-law Margaret Annie Griffiths, who held it until her death in 1969. A 1915 mortgage probably funded the eastern-elevation changes, and the house left the Boyce family in 1978.

The street was formerly called Curzon Street and was renamed Fernside Street by 1955. Inside, the living and dining rooms keep moulded pressed-metal ceilings, and the fireplaces have moulded timber or marble surrounds. The wrought-iron verandah balustrade on the western facade did not originally belong to the house.

Fernside stands on a levelled terrace above Fernside Street, with the ground falling away to an escarpment east of the house; the western facade and its wide concrete steps are reached from the carriage drive at the front. The eastern verandah looks out over the Great Dividing Range, and conifers frame the garden.

Sir Arthur Kennedy, Governor of Queensland from 1877 to 1883, used Fernside as his summer residence, following a pattern in which Toowoomba houses served as vice-regal retreats; Harlaxton House was rented by Lord Lamington and Gabbinbar by Lord Chelmsford. Vernon Redwood, Mayor of Toowoomba and an MLA, also rented the villa in the early 20th century.
