Picnic Point, Toowoomba

Picnic Point is a recreation area spanning 65 hectares along the Great Dividing Range at Tourist Road, offering views toward Table Top Mountain and Lockyer Valley. The site contains multiple playgrounds, licensed restaurants, barbecue stations, walking trails, restroom facilities, and parking accessible from different entry points.

The site was designated a public recreation area in 1885, beginning with 38 acres before Toowoomba City Council expanded it over time. This early recognition as a leisure destination shaped its development into a popular spot for locals and visitors.

The Western Wakka Wakka people have long connections to this elevated land, having used its resources and maintained their presence here. Today, the site reflects this heritage through how locals and visitors experience and respect the natural surroundings.

A compass installed in 1930 on the lookout guides visitors toward specific geographic landmarks visible across the landscape. This old tool remains a practical and intriguing relic that connects orientation with history.
