Walter Taylor Bridge

The Walter Taylor Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the Brisbane River, linking Indooroopilly and Chelmer. It features two lanes for vehicles and a separate path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction began in the 1930s during an economic downturn and finished in 1936. Steel cables salvaged from Sydney Harbour Bridge's construction phase were incorporated into its design.

The bridge became central to how people moved between western suburbs that were previously cut off from each other. This transformation reshaped how communities in the area connected and traveled through their daily lives.

Drivers and pedestrians can use the bridge daily. It is wise to check on footpath conditions beforehand, as maintenance work can occasionally close access.

The bridge towers once contained apartments, making it the only inhabited bridge structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The last residents vacated in 2010, leaving behind a remarkable piece of bridge history.
