Oogarding, Heritage-listed villa in Bardon, Australia
Oogarding is a two-story Mediterranean Revival villa in Bardon with smooth rendered walls, glazed terracotta roof tiles, and decorative details on both the exterior and interior. The building contains four bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, dining and living spaces with extensions added during the 1960s.
The villa was built between 1940 and 1941 by builder Jan Cupka under architect Mervyn Rylance's supervision. James Gervase Joyce, owner of Helidon Spa, commissioned the project as a reflection of his business success.
The name draws from an Aboriginal language and links the villa to Helidon Spa, a source of wealth for the Joyce family who lived there until 1999. This connection to local heritage shapes how the place is understood today.
The residence sits on Simpsons Road where its architectural features can be seen from the street. Visitors should be aware that this is a private home and access may be limited to external viewing.
The house blends Mediterranean architecture with Georgian elements, a rare combination in Brisbane that was adapted for the local climate. This architectural experiment shows how European styles could work with Australian conditions.
