Toowong Cemetery, Heritage-listed cemetery on Mount Coot-tha slopes in Brisbane, Australia.
Toowong Cemetery is a 44-hectare burial ground located where Frederick Street meets Mount Coot-tha Road in Brisbane's western suburbs. The site contains multiple sections for different types of burials and sits across rolling terrain on the Mount Coot-tha hillside.
The cemetery was established in 1866 and officially opened in 1875 to serve Brisbane's expanding population. Among those buried here is Samuel Wensley Blackall, the second governor of Queensland.
The cemetery's separate sections reflect how different religious and cultural communities were organized when Brisbane was developing. Walking through, you can see how the layout itself tells the story of who lived here and how society was structured.
The gates are open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, allowing visitors to explore the grounds freely. Keep in mind that new grave plots are no longer available, though some family burial spaces may still be in use.
The cemetery holds 387 Commonwealth war graves from soldiers who died in both World Wars. These burials stand as a reminder of those who fought and fell far from home.
