The Toowong Municipal Library, designed by architect James Birrell, opened in April 1961 as part of Brisbane City Council's post-war facilities development program.
The library building reflects modernist architectural principles of the 1960s through its geometric form and innovative use of contemporary construction materials.
The structure functioned as a district library until 2001, when operations moved to Toowong Village Shopping Centre, transforming the original building into business premises.
The building combines a cavity brick foundation with a steel-framed upper level, creating a layered structure that resembles a floating geometric form.
