Toowong Municipal Library

The Toowong Municipal Library is a library building in Toowong with an unusual twelve-sided shape located on Coronation Drive. The structure combines a brick base with a steel frame in its upper sections and uses timber, glass, and contemporary construction methods.

Architect James Birrell designed this library building, which opened in April 1961 as part of Brisbane's post-war development. The building served the community as a district library until 2001, when operations relocated to Toowong Village Shopping Centre.

The building shows 1960s modern design through its twelve-sided shape and use of materials typical of that era. This geometric form was an unusual choice for a public library at the time.

The building no longer operates as a library but now serves as business premises. It is located on Coronation Drive and is easy to spot from the street thanks to its distinctive twelve-sided shape.

The building appears to float thanks to its steel-frame construction resting on a brick base, showing early engineering innovations from that era. This layered design was an experimental approach for public buildings at the time.
