The building was designed by Richard Gailey in 1874 in Victorian style and represents the continuity of riverside commerce and social use. Over its existence it experienced several floods and fires, yet maintained its characteristic architectural identity.

The building is easily reached by river from the Brisbane River using the CityCat ferry terminal, which offers a practical arrival option. The different bar areas and dining spaces are spread across various levels, so it helps to allow time to explore the facilities.
