Greenbank Military Range, Military training facility in Greenbank, Australia
Greenbank Military Range is a defence training facility in southeast Queensland, set on a large expanse of designated land used for a range of exercises. Separate zones on the site are dedicated to driving instruction, emergency response drills, and general military training.
The site served as a military concentration area during World War II before it officially opened in 1952 for National Service training. This shift turned a temporary wartime use into a lasting peacetime facility.
The range is used by both defence personnel and police services, making it one of the few sites in Queensland where military and civilian emergency training happen side by side. Passing the perimeter, visitors can sometimes spot military vehicles or training formations moving across the open ground.
Public access is limited because active training takes place regularly across the grounds. It is worth checking access conditions before visiting, as many areas are closed during operational periods.
A Bristol Beaufort bomber crashed on the site in 1945 after a gunnery exercise, and the incident led to significant changes in how training operations were run at the facility. The crash is considered a turning point in aviation safety practices at Australian military sites.
