Burns Philp Building, Normanton, Heritage mercantile warehouse in Normanton, Australia.
The Burns Philp Building is a mercantile warehouse positioned at the corner of Landsborough and Caroline Streets, with three gabled sections and corrugated iron exterior walls. The structure shows solid timber frame work and was later modified multiple times to house different functions.
The building was constructed in 1884 and is the oldest surviving store of the Burns Philp Company, which handled shipping and trade operations across North Queensland. It survived changes in the region and remains a record of the area's early commercial history.
The building displays commercial architectural styles from colonial Queensland through its timber frame construction and how spaces were adapted for different business purposes. The corner position on the streets was a typical feature of important trading buildings in this region.
The building stands near the historic town wharves and today functions as a community center with a library and tourist information services. Visitors can explore the site easily and obtain information about the area there.
During the gold rush period of the 1880s, this Normanton branch generated higher profits than the company's larger establishments in Townsville. Regional wealth drew trade that this location served exceptionally well.
