Staaten River National Park

Staaten River National Park covers vast areas of tropical savannas, wetlands and woodlands in northern Queensland. The reserve contains multiple waterholes and swamp systems that form habitats for various animals and plants.

A Dutch explorer named the Staaten River in 1623 after the Dutch parliament. This naming reflects the early European expeditions that explored the region.

The Kunjen, Agwamin, Kutjar, Koknar and Kokoberrin peoples have deep ties to the rivers and land visible throughout the park. These connections shape how the landscape is used and which areas hold meaning for the local communities.

The landscape is remote and largely undeveloped, so visitors should expect basic conditions and limited facilities. Four-wheel-drive vehicles and careful planning are needed to reach waterholes and isolated areas.

The park shelters a population of up to one thousand golden-shouldered parrots, which has made it a recognized Important Bird Area. These rare parrots stand out as one of the park's most remarkable inhabitants.
