Seventy-Five Mile Beach

Seventy-Five Mile Beach runs for 120 kilometers along the eastern shore of Fraser Island and serves as both a natural beach and a functioning roadway. The hard sand surface allows vehicles to travel safely alongside pedestrians and swimmers who use the beach for leisure.

UNESCO designated Fraser Island as a World Heritage site in 1992, acknowledging the exceptional ecological value of this coastline within a larger protected environment. This recognition elevated the beach's profile and strengthened conservation measures for the entire area.

The Butchulla people, the original inhabitants of the island, relied on this coastline for fishing and seasonal travel routes that shaped their way of life. Visitors can recognize how deeply the ocean connection defined their presence in this landscape.

Drivers need a permit to operate vehicles on the beach and must respect a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour, as small aircraft regularly land on the sand. Check weather conditions and local guidelines before setting out to ensure safe travel.

The rusted wreck of the Maheno, a former passenger ship from the early 1900s, sits exposed on the shore and reminds visitors of maritime history. Nearby, colored sand cliffs called The Pinnacles and natural freshwater springs create geological formations that feel unlike typical beaches.
