The beach gained prominence after Fraser Island received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1992, recognizing its exceptional natural formations and ecosystems.
Local indigenous people, the Butchulla, maintained a connection to this coastal area through fishing practices and seasonal movements along the shore.
Vehicles require a permit and must maintain speeds under 80 kilometers per hour, yielding to aircraft that use the beach as a landing strip.
The beach contains the rusted Maheno shipwreck, fresh water springs, and colored sand formations known as The Pinnacles along its length.
