Rockhampton Railway Workshops, Railway maintenance facility in Depot Hill, Rockhampton, Australia
Rockhampton Railway Workshops is a railway complex in Depot Hill that includes a roundhouse for steam locomotives, machine shops, and maintenance buildings on Bolsover Street. The facility spans multiple structures built to house the equipment and work areas needed for repairing and servicing trains.
The workshops were built between 1915 and 1953 following Queensland's 1863 decision to develop a narrow gauge railway network in the region. The facility became the main center where trains were kept running through repairs and maintenance.
The workshops show how people built industrial spaces in Queensland during the early 1900s, using steel frames and corrugated iron that you can still see on the buildings today. Walking through reveals how workers organized their daily tasks across these large open areas.
The site covers a large area, so allow time to walk through the different buildings and sections. Good walking shoes are recommended since this is an active facility with uneven ground and industrial elements.
The roundhouse is the only one of its kind built in Queensland for steam locomotives and one of only two still standing in Australia. This circular design was rare and the building itself demonstrates an unusual engineering solution for the time.
