Museum of Tropical Queensland, Maritime museum in Townsville, Australia.
The Museum of Tropical Queensland displays over 8,000 artifacts from 25 shipwrecks along the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef. The collection includes objects from different time periods and documents the maritime history of the region.
The museum was established in 1987 and underwent major renovation in 2000 when a replica of HMS Pandora's bow was added. This expansion reflected the growing importance of maritime archaeology in the institution's collection.
The exhibitions present stories of Indigenous peoples from tropical regions alongside European maritime exploration through artifacts and documentation on display. Visitors can see how these two perspectives are woven together throughout the collections.
You can move through the galleries at your own pace and explore the different exhibition spaces distributed throughout the building. The areas are clearly labeled so you can easily navigate and plan your visit based on your interests.
The collection includes items and remains recovered directly from the seafloor by diving teams, including personal objects belonging to shipwreck victims. These direct connections to people from the past make the stories more tangible than in a typical museum setting.
